In Memoriam: Collette Ramsey Baker, founder of DRF, 1918-2010

On May 9 2010,Collette Ramsey Baker, founder of DRF, passed away at age 91 with her adoring husband and devoted companion of twenty-two years, Maurice Baker, constantly at her side. After living with a substantial hearing loss for many years, at age 35 she had her hearing completely restored with an early fenestration operation. In gratitude, just over 50 years ago she founded the Deafness Research Foundation (DRF), for which she became widely known and respected, and was listed in Who's Who for Women. Under her leadership, DRF gave grants to colleges and other research institutions for research and improvement of hearing.

Dedicated to Healthy Hearing

"The Deafness Research Foundation plays a seminal role in launching the independent research careers of many research scientists in hearing research. The grant awarded by the DRF provides the "seed" support needed to obtain preliminary data that enables a grantee to apply for and get a larger grant award to expand their research resources and efforts."
James F. Battey, Jr., MD, Ph D
Director, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, NIH

DRF is the leading national source of private funding for research in hearing and balance science. Our grants have resulted in treatments for hearing and balance related conditions helping those living with hearing loss and protecting those at risk.

DRF also publishes Hearing Health magazine. Our publication has a circulation of approximately 30,000 and recently won an APEX 2009 Award of Excellence for Magazine & Journal Writing.
