Star-Studded Gala Benefits Children with Hearing Loss
Garth Brooks, Jon McLaughlin, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo gave energetic performances and many more celebrities were in attendance at Starkey Hearing Foundation’s annual “So the World May Hear” Awards Gala this summer. Big News in the Big Apple
The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission announced this summer the implementation of a pilot program to test the functionality and public acceptance of induction loop systems – a first in the nation. The Hearing Loss Association of America’s fi rst New York City Walk4Hearing is set for Sunday, October 19, 2008, in Riverside Park, Manhattan. Hundreds of walkers will turn out to help raise awareness that hearing loss affects 36 million Americans. To register, visit www.walk4hearing.org.
Peace Corps Kenya Program Reopening
After a four-month hiatus in early 2008 due to political unrest, the Peace Corps and its deaf education program has returned to the Republic of Kenya. Launched in 1992, the deaf education program was initially aimed at training educators on better teaching methods and broadening the production of learning materials and facilities for deaf and hard of hearing students. The program now includes computer training and health and HIV/AIDS education programs.
Bryan Adams Exhibition
Musician Bryan Adams introduced his photography collection of Hear the World Ambassadors in an interactive exhibit that opens in Zurich on September 23, 2008. Adams’ photographs of Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart, Plácido Domingo, Harry Belafonte, Lindsay Lohan, Annie Lennox and others will be auctioned online at www. hear-the-world.com/exhibition, with the net proceeds going to the Hear the World Foundation.
