Marines and Hearing Loss

More than 58,000 Marines have reported ringing in their ears subsequently coming back from deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan, and VA says hearing loss will impact 800,000 veterans by 2011. Modern-day hearing protection clearly makes a difference.

George Gates, medical director of the Deafness Research Foundation, said that though the armed forces does a good job teaching troops about hearing loss, it is often not the priority while they are outside the wire. "When you're in battle, hearing loss is not on your list," Gates said.
